Picture this:

It’s Friday night and you’ve gotten off work more than an hour late. You’re tired, hungry, and frustrated over a conversation you had with your boss that morning.

You make your way onto the highway to head home, and you drive straight into a mob of… you guessed it… traffic. As you merge into the sea of cars, you accidentally cut off the guy behind you. You hold your breath hoping he’ll let it slide, but it’s too late. He’s already fuming with rage.

You hear them relentlessly honking at you as if you’re driving in a Mid-Asian metropolis. You don’t know what he’s screaming at you, but you can tell from the view in your front mirror that it isn’t good. You feel your blood pressure rise, your palms begin to sweat, and your already fading mental clarity has completely disappeared.

You see red.

Now, you’re upset, the guy behind you is upset, and you both aren’t going anywhere fast. You’re stuck in traffic with each other, with nothing but your road rage in common.

But why do we get so angry behind the wheel? What causes road rage? How can we avoid it?

How common is road rage?
