Self-Care Is Not All You Can Eat

Self-care is hip right now.

Most people are overworked, burned out, and chronically exhausted. We’re all tired. Self-care is the obvious solution — if you’re overworked, you should relax, breathe, and maybe take a spa day here or there. It’s good for you. Self-care is crucial when it comes to developing emotional health and positive wellbeing.

But can you have too much self-care? Is it possible that in a culture that celebrates overworking, overeating, and sleep deprivation, that we also unconsciously glorify too much self-care?

Yes. Yes, you can have too much self-care, and yes, we culturally glorify the over-indulgence in self-care. Self-care can be overdone, and it’s a lot more common than you might think.

Some Stress Is Good

I’m painfully introverted. Large crowds make me nervous, gatherings with more than 6 people make me awkward and quiet (even more than usual), and not to mention, I’m a writer. Need I say more?

But even as an introvert, I need plenty of social interaction in my life consistently in order to help ease my social anxiety. As much as the devil on my shoulder would love to sit inside and write Medium articles and watch reruns of Drake and Josh all day, I…
