It’s Time to Burn My First Novel

This is an easy article to write, but it was really hard to admit the truth to myself about my first novel.

It was hard to admit to myself that my first novel (the first thing I ever wrote) was not something I was going to finish. It wasn’t something I wanted to finish. It was hard for me to admit that I now feel no connection to a story that I spent 3 months working on.

It was hard to admit that I don’t give a damn about “that novel I wrote in quarantine” anymore.

I held onto it for so long out of pride.

Just writing those words makes my head feel lighter.

Now that that’s over, let’s talk about why quitting long-term projects might be the best thing for you.

Let’s talk about how not writing books can make you a better writer.

Your ideas don’t belong to you.

I liked telling people that I was “working on a novel” (imagine me saying that with a British accent for effect, please).

When you’re working on a novel, you’re a little bit interesting. You’re ambitious. Books mean you have something to say. Working on a book means you have the ambition, grit, and discipline to carry out…
