I’m In An Abusive Relationship With Chicago
On summertime in the windy city.
From the months of January through April, living in Chicago is next to impossible.
In January, our winters are nearing their worst points, and we’ve lost the “winter wonderland” feeling you get from those early snowfalls and the holiday activities that go with them. January in Chicago kind of sucks, and it’s a sign of things to come.
February is brutal.
I’m a professional athlete, which means that most days, my first activity is getting to the gym for a workout. I love that I get to call working out “work”, and I nearly always spring out of bed ready to start the day.
Not in February.
In February, when I wake up for morning training, it’s still dark and cold. When I walk to my car to shovel the snow off of it, it’s still dark and cold. When I get to the gym, it’s still dark and cold.
After training, there’s usually a bit of sunshine, but the cold doesn’t fade for months. This daily routine makes me feel like I have to earn my sunshine. The Chicago weather toughens you up a bit.
March is tough too, but usually only because pretty much every winter in Chicago lasts longer than it’s supposed to. Whoever our Groundhog is, he sees his shadow…
